Jennifer Hanway Q+A-Holistic Nutrition, Superfoods+HIIT!
Back in June I was lucky enough to get invited to a ‘SWEAT & SUPERFOODS’ HIIT class with the amazing Jennifer Hanway !
She had the class s-w-e-a-t-i-n-g like no other, and I was so sore the next WEEK! But, the best part was her home-cooked superfoods, (the buckwheat avocado toast was my favorite!) She has accomplished so much and I have decided that I want to share her knowledge and expertise with my readers! This blog post will be a Q&A with Jennifer herself! She will be talking all about her experiences as a Holistic Nutritionist, Superfoods (as well as a recipe included!), her love for HIIT classes, and more!

Q+A:
What/who inspired you into Holistic Nutrition and living such a lifestyle?
Like a lot of Holistic Practitioners I came into this career looking for answers on how to improve my own health. I had been struggling with poor gut health and weight issues since I was a child, and conventional medicine gave me no answers.
At the same time as I started to seek out other avenues I started work at London’s first barre studio, barrecore. The owner/director was a Bio Signature Practitioner, and after consulting with her I started to understand my own health challenges and how to heal them.
As I started to heal, and feel and look better than I ever I had I decided that I wanted to learn as much as I could, and help others feel as empowered as I did by feeling happy and healthy. I mentored under my director, took my first Bio Signature Course in 2012 and have never looked back!
How did you become a Level 2 Bio Signature Modulation Practitioner? Is it a tough and long journey? Any obstacles?
The first time I took my Bio Signature Training (I re-cert every year to continue to learn and keep up to date with new information) I though I had walked into a pre-med lecture! After the training I decided that I wanted to be the best practitioner I could be, so I read and researched everything I can, and continue to do so.
Since then I have taken Level 1 three times and became Level 2 certified last year. To understand the material and use it with best practice you have to eat, sleep and breathe it!
You are also a Personal Trainer! What’s your style of training people? Any specific techniques? And how can one hire you to train them?
When I discovered weight training (thanks to my now husband who is a Strength and Conditioning Coach and used to work for one of the UK’s top sports teams), my body changed completely. I used to be a group fitness class junkie (and instructor), but this just led me to being ‘skinny fat’!
Once again, after seeing the positive changes in both mind and body that weight training gave me, I wanted to be able to help others, especially women reap the same benefits.
After getting certified both in the UK and again when I came to the US my clients programs focus on weight training, with a little HIIT and yoga for balance. I’m a huge believer that everybody should incorporate weight training into their regime, and I love helping women become strong mentally and physically and break through barriers.
I keep a very small personal training client roster (I work with a lot of VIP clients – previous clients include the British Royal Family and Game of Thrones actresses) and see clients at BFX Back Bay. The best way to catch me is at one of my events; I have 2 coming up very soon:

I know you also teach some HIIT classes as I’ve take one myself! How come you chose to teach HIIT classes? What are the benefits of this type of workout?
I love HIIT workouts as they really are what I consider ‘bang for your buck’ workouts: get in, get dirty, get out! HIIT can take so many forms, from a 10 minute workout, to a longer form workout combining HIIT and strength training.
HIIT workouts can be done anywhere at anytime, with no equipment needed. They are great for fat loss without raising cortisol levels (our stress hormone) or contributing to overtraining.
One of my favorite 10 minutes HIIT blocks is so simple:
Sprints for 35 seconds on at maximum effort / 25 seconds rest. Repeat 10 times!
How can one sign up to take one of your classes? (which by the way always include some amazing homemade food afterwards! )
You can find details of all my classes, workshops and talks at: http://www.jenniferhanway.com/events-1/
I have some super fun events coming up, including my first in the role of Brand Ambassador for Kit and Ace at their Newbury Street Store on 10/29. You will be taken through an energizing workout, have brunch designed by me and Mother Juice, we will discuss how we can empower ourselves through health and nutrition, and close with an empowerment meditation. Oh, and its free!
On your website, you share many recipes, which top 2 recipes would you recommend for someone looking to change up their breakfast routine but also keeping it simple and quick to make?
Definitely any of my Superfood Smoothie recipes! I love having a Superfood Smoothie for breakfast as it’s a way of getting in some great blood sugar stabilizing and energy boosting protein and fats in, combined with a bunch of veggies and fruits, and superfood boosters such as collage, maca, cacao and spirulina. All you need to do is throw in the blender – even someone on the busiest schedule can do that!
My absolute favorite is my Tahini Greens, the recipe is below:
Tahini Greens Superfood Smoothie
- 1 scoop vanilla vegan protein powder
- 1 cup kale
- 1 cup frozen spinach
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 tablespoon tahini
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1.5 cups water
- Ice
Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
This recipe is part of my 10 Day Lean and Clean Plan, which is a great resource for anyone looking to jumpstart a healthy regime, and contains over 25 clean eating recipes, meal plans, grocery lists and meal prepping instructions, and is just $9.99.

What are the top 3 principles you live by (health/food wise) that you can recommend and vouch for others to follow?
- Focus on quality over quantity when it comes to both food and exercise
- Make great sleep a priority
- Develop a mindset that you deserve to eat nutritious food and look after your body; its not a chore but a privilege.
What else can one find on your website?
Recipes, healthy living blog posts, workout ideas, my 28 Day Low Carb Boot Camp and lots more!
What would you say are some future plans / goals?
To keep learning and growing and find new ways to help people empower themselves through Healthy Living.
2017 will see the start of Superfood Society, a weekly class at Boston Public Market at which you will have the opportunity to make some of my Superfood favorites and take them home, monthly events with Kit and Ace, the launch of my You Tube Channel, and the launch of a new service, affordable monthly personalized training and nutrition programs designed to help everyone reach their individualized goals.
